A Journey Toward Thankfulness (Day 24)

Some of my earliest memories are of the books that I loved. I can picture my nightstand, piled high with books I was reading. I was always in the middle of reading three or four books. I’d check out my limit at the school library, walk to the public library and do the same, and then on Sundays, I’d check out my limit at the church library as well.  I’m so thankful for my parents, my sister, and the teachers who gifted me with a love for reading.

Books for me are an escape from the chaos of life – a catharsis in many ways. I can unwind after a long day by joining the world of the characters in the books. I can laugh – or cry – as I step away from life’s stresses for a little while. Not only that, but I learn from books … I learn about myself, about others, about my faith.

As I’ve grown, my taste in books has evolved and my bookshelves have expanded. In my family the running joke is that we won’t die until we read the last book on our shelves.  If that is the case, I will live forever!  I’m so grateful to be surrounded by good books.  Now, I think I’ll go spend an hour or so with my latest one…
