Silent Night – By Colleen Coble

This is  an endearing story about Bree Matthews, her search-and-rescue dog Samson, her husband Kade, and her sister-in-law Lauri.  Bree has recently lost her unborn child and is struggling with the loss as Christmas approaches.  Lauri, a troubled college student, shows up unexpectedly early, even more withdrawn than usual.  When a parachuter turns up missing and Bree’s sent out to search for him, Lauri becomes mysteriously curious about the events.

I give this book four stars.  I did not realize until I got started that it was a novella, so was quite a bit shorter than the books I normally choose to read.  I also did not realize that it was a part of a series, and I’ve not read the other books in the series, so perhaps I wasn’t as connected to the characters as I might have been otherwise.

However, that said, it was an excellent story, both of Bree finding a way through her grief over losing her unborn baby and of Lauri finding a way to look beyond herself and be concerned about others more than herself.  It was a cute story and the mystery of the missing parachuter served to help carry the plot along with a little bit of intrigue.  I’d definitely recommend that you read Silent Night.
