This is Your Captain Speaking – By Gavin MacLeod

This is the autobiography/biography of Gavin MacLeod (written with Mark Dagostino), most known for his long-lasting roles on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Love Boat.

MacLeod was born into a home of very modest means and grew up amidst its challenges knowing just what he wanted to do. He lost his father at an early age and later pledged to serve God after pleading with Him to save his mother’s life.

In this book, MacLeod shares the many adventures and challenges he’s experienced on his “fantastic voyage through Hollywood, faith, and life.”

four stars of five

I give this book four stars – what a surprisingly delightful read! I say surprisingly because, in general, I am not an avid reader of biographies or autobiographies.  However, I couldn’t resist choosing this book, because I can vividly remember watching The Love Boat when I was growing up, and I always adored Captain Stubing.  I’m so glad I did, though, because it was really interesting to hear about his life story and what has happened to him in the years since.

As one can imagine in respect to a star on a favorite childhood show, MacLeod never existed for me outside of his role as Captain Stubing, so I had no clue about his childhood, other film work, or his life since the show. I was intrigued to read about all of it, though will confess that I was the most fascinated by hearing of the adventures of his time with The Love Boat.  What an amazing experience and role that was! I also had no idea that because of it, he became an ambassador for Princess Cruises for so many years.

I will admit that the one thing that annoyed me about this book at some points was the amount of “name dropping” that MacLeod does throughout the book, but I guess that’s to be expected given the pathway his life has taken.  And, when I thought about it in the context of him sharing what has been a blessed, fantastic voyage in life rather than boasting about who he’s met, my perspective shifted.

I loved reading about how MacLeod came to know Christ, how he reunited with Patti, and how they served the Lord together.

If you have ever been a fan of MacLeod’s film work, take the time to read this book … you won’t regret it!
